Floral Scents

One of the floral scents that brings summer immediately to mind is jasmine. It’s a very “beachy” scent since it is used as a fragrance in many suntan lotion brands. Most people think of jasmine as a flower of exotic, far-off lands - but three types of jasmine are prolific in New Jersey, and one, Winter Jasmine, is native! Winter Jasmine is a yellow-cream flower that blooms in January and is extremely hardy. Night-blooming Jasmine is known for its fragrance, which is strongest at night. But the “star” for those of us here in South Jersey is Star Jasmine! Star Jasmine is a prolific white-flowered vine that blooms in early summer and can double or triple its growing area each year. It’s best grown in a pot with a trellis to climb; the pot contains its wild growth and forces it to put its energy into climbing. Here’s a sweet-smelling tip if you live in or near South Jersey: along Route 295, between exits 8-15, roll down your windows and breathe in the glorious summer scent of the Star Jasmine that completely blankets the sides of the highway like a heavy summer snowfall! You’ll instantly be transported to a beautiful beach! Enjoy!
