Feature Flower Friday: Poppy

Feature Flower Friday: Poppy

Hi there all of you Garden of Eden Flower Shop (and chocolates and gifts) fans! We’d like to welcome you all to our new Feature Flower Friday! Each week, we will be feature a different type of flower, the meaning behind them and the reasons you would give or present them to someone else. In honor of Veterans Day being observed today, we invite you to join us as we cover the poppy. Poppies have been the principal flower of remembrance ever since the First World War, and now you can see them all the time around Memorial Day and Veterans Day.  Although these flowers are typically widely distributed on Memorial Day (as they are a symbol of sacrifice, for which the holiday is for), they can still be found out during Veterans Day.  Regardless, the flower is noted for commemorating our military, and is great to gift to this Veterans Day! So, besides being as symbol of sacrifice, what other meanings does the poppy flower exhibit?  Well, in the west, it is a symbol of being at peace, but also a symbol of consolation.  Now, it’s important to note that in the East, this flower has entirely different meanings.  For example, the poppy represents success and a deep, passionate love in Pacific nations, and a white poppy is typically used in the same way that we use a red poppy here—remembrance and sacrifice.  It just goes to show how vastly different the meanings of flowers can be depending on where you are in the world! To thank a veteran that gave it all, leaving fresh poppies at their resting place is a solemn gesture that truly speaks volumes.  We here at the Garden of Eden Flower Shop cannot thank our veterans—those still with us and those who are enough—for their time, service, and sacrifices made protecting our nation. Please join us this weekend in thanking a veteran!
