Each week, we will be feature a different type of flower, the meaning behind them and the reasons you would give or present them to someone else. Since it is finally December, we plan to do something a little special for Feature Flower Friday due to the holidays. Each week, we’re going to focus on a different traditional Christmas flower, and explain some of the meaning and symbolism behind it. This week, join us as we discuss Christmas trees! The Christmas tree is a staple in any home that is celebrating the Christmas season, but how did it all come to be? Well, the evergreen has been considered a symbol of life since the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, and the Romans used to decorate their home with evergreen branches during New Years to bring them prosperity in the coming year. As Christianity spread West, the two traditions seemed to combine: evergreens and Christmas. In addition to this, a legend in the Middle Ages said that when the Christ child was born, every tree in the world shook off its ice and became evergreen, perpetuating the importance of an evergreen tree during the holiday season. As the years went on, Christmas trees became more and more significant, being solidified in culture by the Victorians, who decorated their trees with lavish ornaments. In short, the evergreen characteristic of the Christmas tree symbolizes the new life that is the true meaning of the Christmas holiday. It serves as a physical reminder of why the holiday celebrated, and why it will be continued to be celebrated for years to come. All of us at the Garden of Eden Flower Shop would like to wish you and your family a very happy holiday!
