Feature Flower Friday: Hollyhock

Hi there all of you Garden of Eden Flower Shop (and chocolates and gifts) fans! We’d like to welcome you all to our new Feature Flower Friday! Each week, we will be feature a different type of flower, the meaning behind them and the reasons you would give or present them to someone else. Join us this week, as we cover the hollyhock! Hollyhocks are a stunning, large blooming flower that has grown in abundance in both Asia and Europe. The flower has had a long history in many cultures, with most revering it as an icon of healing and good health. Overtime, this flower has evolved to have a more sophisticated meaning to it. The hollyhock flower, in full, represents royalty, fruitfulness, and ambition. Due to its ability to grow almost anywhere, it is the perfect metaphor for someone who is ready to go out and take on the world, or who has desires to achieve all that they can. In addition, the hollyhock stands for fertility, as many cultures—including the English—used the hollyhock to help during childbirth. If the mother was experiencing great pain, she would be instructed to chew on hollyhock shoots. Hollyhock was also used to make “fertility wine” by letting the blooms soak in ordinary wine, and then drunk by pregnant women. Other uses of hollyhock include firewood, as its stems is sturdy enough to give off a lasting burn. The hollyhock also serves as a great landscaping flower, thanks to its ability to grow strong in just about any condition. Regardless of how you plan to use the hollyhock, know that we are here to help. Just come on in, and see what we can do to get a hollyhock in your next arrangement! Have a great weekend!
